Camp Owls adventures are sure to offer you an unmatched excursion to discover more about yourself, your peers and FAU. Camp Owls is operated through Campus Recreation's Outdoor Adventure Program and is designed to help incoming first-year students make a smooth transition into college by learning more about FAU, meeting new people, and growing in leadership and self-reliance.

Group sizes on all trips are kept small. This allows for more interactions and for you to get to know your fellow classmates. 

There are multiple choices offered at FAU for incoming first-year students. We hope you consider registering for Camp Owls, get outside your comfort zone, and challenge yourself through adventure!

Lead a Camp Owls Trip

Training for Camp Owls staff is a semester long commitment that includes workshops around safety, group management, facilitation, and wilderness leadership that culminates with a week-long training expedition in May. Not only do you get to participate in one of the coolest leadership trainings at FAU, the impact in make volunteering for Camp Owls helps prepare the next generation of Owls for success through challenge!

Training dates and application will be posted soon. Participating as Camp Owl staff also enables you to complete the Certified Student Leader Program: Wilderness Track.

You may also apply to work as a Camp Owls manager for the summer (preference given to previous volunteer staff). These positions are responsible for leading Expedition trips, marketing at Orientation days, and organizing all aspects of logistics.

Camp Owl Trip Offerings

Registration Packets must be filled out completely and turned in after you register for a trip. Packets can be emailed to  outdoor@fau.edu, faxed to 561-297-2421 or dropped off by hand to the Outdoor Adventure mailbox located at the FAU Boca Raton Recreation and Fitness Center in the membership office. Registration will not be considered complete until payment and packet is turned in.

Trip accommodations include transportation from FAU's Boca campus to all designated trip locations. Meals take into account any dietary restrictions while remaining simple, healthy, and reviewed by our nutritionist. This will leave students with healthy inspiration for future college life meals.

Group gear, such as tents, will be provided to all trips. Planned activity costs and gear rentals (canoes rentals, snorkel equipment, park entrance fees, tubing, campsites, etc.) are included in the cost of the trip. To be able to move-in early, participants must attend the whole program.

Trips do not include food while driving to/from trip locations or personal items such as sleeping bags and sleeping pads. These items are available for rent at Outdoor Adventure’s base camp office. Swimming ability is highly suggested for our water-based trips.

Camp Owls is open to students of all levels of experience. The activities are all beginner friendly and appropriate instruction will be provided.

Students who have registered for a Camp Owls Experience trip and are living on-campus in the fall will be able to move in to their Residence Hall prior to trip departure. Registering for Camp Owls does NOT guarantee fall housing. Please make sure your housing contract is complete.

For students living on-campus or commuting applications for a parking decal should be available the week before classes start. If you are not able to apply for one before the trip we ask that you complete the Participant Waiver and Hold Harmless Form, and return it to the Parking and Transportation office located in the Student Services office no less than 10 business days before the trip. Do not park in any of the garages on-campus during your trip; Parking and Transportation may ticket your vehicle.

Cell phone service may or may not be available in all locations that you will be visiting. It is advised that you and your parents understand that you may not be in contact while on the trip. All of our student leaders go through specific training for these trips. All leaders will have a charged cell phone on them to make contact in case of an emergency. Your parents/guardians will be able to contact University Police, who will contact the field staff if they need to relay any emergencies at home.

You will be camping in tents at your designated trip location that you selected during registration.

No. Due to campground restrictions at State Parks we are limited to two tents per campsite. All tents and group gear will be provided while on trip.

The trip includes: housing for early move-in, food while camping, group gear such as tents, stoves and cookware, all reservations for campsites and activities, and transportation from campus to the location and activities. We do suggest that you bring some extra cash in case we stop for food and snacks on the way. Personal camping equipment such as sleeping bags and sleeping pads are not included, but are available for rent on a first come, first served basis.

No, our trips accommodate for any dietary restrictions that you might have, as long as prior notice is provided on the Medical and Waiver Form.
