DEAN OF STUDENTS OFFICE
Holds
Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution holds are placed when students have overdue conduct sanction(s). Students are made aware of the due dates of all sanctions through the outcome letter which is sent after the resolution of a conduct case. Students are also given an auto-reminder two weeks prior to the date their sanctions are due. One week prior to holds being placed, a hold notice letter is sent to the student through email.
Holds prohibit a student from doing all business at FAU such as registration, graduation, and add/drop. A hold will not be temporarily lifted in order for a student to register for classes. When a Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution hold is placed on a student’s account it will not be removed until the student has completed their outstanding sanctions.
For questions regarding a Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution related hold, please contact studentconduct@fau.edu.
Student Conduct Flowchart
The Student Conduct Process Flowchart below is currently being updated to meet electronic accessibility standards. The full details of the procedures represented in the flowchart can be found in Regulation 4.007 Student Code of Conduct, available online at: https://www.fau.edu/regulations/chapter-4/.
Student Conduct Sanctions
Purpose
Student Conduct sanctioning is intended to:
- Promote the student’s education regarding the experience.
- Educate the student so they do not commit the violation again.
- Offer the student the opportunity to restore any harm resulting from the incident.
- Ensure that University expectations regarding appropriate behavior are clear.
- Educate the student concerning how their behavior impacts others in the University Community.
Student Conduct Sanctions
Sanctions may be imposed by the Dean of Students upon any individual student or student organization found “Responsible” for violations of this Code. In light of the facts and circumstances of each case, a Student Affairs hold may be placed by the Dean of Students Office on Registration (if not already in place) upon receiving sanctions or failure to comply with the imposed sanctions. A student found responsible for a violation of the Student Code of Conduct will be subject to sanctions proportionate to the offense with consideration given to any aggravating and mitigating circumstances, including but not limited to the student’s conduct record. The assignment of any sanction may be delayed at the discretion of the Dean of Students.
Information for Parents/Guardians
FAU is committed to the success of its students both inside and outside of the classroom. Therefore, it is our goal to maximize students' learning and development, and promote their health, safety, and welfare. In this regard, FAU has implemented a Parental Notification policy in compliance with the request of the Florida Board of Governors. The Parental Notification policy permits the University the right to inform parents or guardians when their student has been found in violation of the following:
- University Alcoholic Beverages policy
- Drug Free Environment policy
- If the student is under the age of 18, the Notice of Charges will be sent to the parents/guardians.
The policy also permits notification in health and safety emergencies regardless of student age or dependent status.
The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) allows for the Office of Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution to discuss alcohol and drug violations of dependent students. For parental inquiries regarding other types of policy violations, the student would need to have a Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) on file with FAU, allowing for Student Affairs matters to be shared with specific persons, without any specified restrictions.

Student Conduct Board
Would you like to be a part of the Florida Atlantic University Student Conduct Board? The Student Conduct Board is a premier leadership opportunity for students interested in gaining experience in the Student Conduct process. The Division of Student Affairs invites students from all campuses to serve on the Student Conduct Board. According to the Student Code of Conduct (Regulation 4.007), board members are "person(s) authorized by the University to determine whether a student has violated the Student Code of Conduct and may recommend sanctions that may be imposed to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students."
What does the Conduct Board do?
The primary responsibility of the Student Conduct and Conflict Resolution Board is to hear cases brought against students accused of violating the Florida Atlantic University Code of Conduct (Regulation 4.007). In a hearing, a panel of faculty/staff and students consider information and witness statements presented and determine if the student is responsible for the violation. If the student is found responsible for the alleged violation, the Conduct Board will make a recommendation to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students.
What does it mean to be a part of the Student Conduct Board?
Becoming a board member means you will be called upon periodically to hear minor and/or major Student Conduct cases. We are looking for students who can be analytical, objective and responsible. A Board member must be able to work cooperatively in a group, articulating his or her own point of view while considering the opinions of others. Members of the Conduct Board are expected to maintain strict confidentiality and to uphold the ethical standards of the University community, both personally and in their capacity as Board Members.
Membership Criteria Expectations:
- Attend mandatory training sessions
- Become knowledgeable about all aspects of the FAU Student Code of Conduct
- Awareness and understanding of the Student Conduct review process
- Act as an effective and cooperative group member and maintain confidentiality at all times
- Commitment to hearing participation (approx. 1-2 hours, 1-3 times a semester). Hearings are scheduled on a case by case basis, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Board members are assigned to cases depending on their availability, so scheduling is flexible.
- Maintain at least a 2.7 GPA and full-time status
- Must be in good academic and disciplinary standing
