Frequently Asked Questions
Spring applicants must apply using the FAU Online Application, not the Common App.
Applicants interested in Florida Atlantic's Wilkes Honors College in Jupiter should apply using the Wilkes Honors College Common App.
For more info, view application steps.
Please note that universities do not provide fee waivers directly. Please contact your school counselor for assistance. If you work with your counselor and have a waiver to send, it can be completed and sent as a scanned PDF to admissions@fau.edu.
If you are accepted, you will be placed in the appropriate courses. If you have completed 12 or more college credits after graduating from high school, you should apply as a transfer student.
Indian River Towers, University Village Apartments and Innovation Village Apartments also have furnishings provided in the common areas. Parliament Hall beds are lofted with a desk/dresser under the bed.
On the Jupiter Campus, all bedrooms are furnished with a bed, dresser, desk and desk chair per student. RH1 and RH2 include a sofa, chair, and coffee table in the living area.
At the Wilkes Honors College, our students take a full curriculum of honors courses designed for them. Also, at most other Honors Colleges, faculty teach only one or a few of their courses as honors courses, while the majority of their teaching is in their regular department.
At the Wilkes Honors College, the Honors College faculty are housed full-time in the Honors College. This allows our students and faculty to form mentoring relationships and a sense of community that lasts throughout the students' undergraduate careers. At the same time, our students and faculty are able to take advantage of the resources of Florida Atlantic, a large and expanding public university with a wealth of opportunities.
We will accept up to 45 credits for accelerated work done prior to entering the Wilkes Honors College. Advanced Placement credits may be counted towards Honors Core requirements. Students arriving with 30 credits will be eligible for sophomore standing.
Many students participate in internships at the world-renowned scientific institutes on the Jupiter campus, including the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and the FAU Stiles-Nicholson Brain Institute. The Boca Raton campus is Florida Atlantic’s main campus, which provides a dynamic learning environment for more than 70% of our 30,000 students.
Located just 1.8 miles from the beach, this campus features everything you’d expect from a modern university: suite-style housing, Division 1 athletics, brand-new recreational facilities, and more. High-achieving students on the Boca Raton campus are invited to join the University Honors Program, which offers advanced Honors seminars, small class sizes, and special advising and registration.
If you're interested in both the Wilkes Honors College and the Boca Raton campus, apply directly to the Wilkes Honors College through the Common App. If admitted, you’ll also be accepted to the Boca Raton campus. If not admitted to the Wilkes Honors College, your application will automatically be reviewed by the Boca Raton campus admissions team for consideration.

1. Financial aid must first have been awarded.
2. The student must have signed an acceptance letter for all awards.
3. The acceptance letter must have been returned to the Office of Student Financial Aid.
If the total amount of financial aid awarded to the student DOES exceed tuition and other fees, and if sufficient dollars are available to cover housing and dining charges, the remaining dollars may be applied to other FAU charges.
If there is only partial financial aid remaining after tuition and fees have been paid by financial aid, the student is required to pay in full all remaining housing and dining charges not covered by financial aid prior to moving into their assigned space. If the total amounts of financial aid awarded to the student DOES NOT exceed tuition and other fees, the student must make payment of all remaining housing and dining charges prior to moving into their assigned space.
Students who have pending financial aid awards will be required to pay in full for all housing and dining fees and then may “reimburse” themselves when financial aid is awarded and distributed during the semester.
Students with a score of 4 on subject areas will receive 3 credit-hours. Students who have been awarded the IB Diploma will be awarded up to 30 credit hours. For further details please consult the IB section of our website.
The Honors College offers these courses as well as assistance with MCAT preparation and the application process. This also applies to students who intend to enter other health professions such as dentistry, optometry, pharmacy and veterinary medicine. In addition, students considering careers in law receive outstanding preparation at the Wilkes Honors College. Again, no particular major is required for admission to law school.
Law schools require strong analytical and writing skills, an outstanding academic record and a competitive LSAT (Law School Admission Test) score. The Honors College's emphasis on writing and critical thinking provides students with the skills law schools seek. Additionally, advisors provide information about law schools and assist with the application process.
The Wilkes Honors College also has exciting pathway programs for those wishing to pursue careers in teaching, engineering, business and more.

Entering first year students can search for other first year students as a roommate through the Housing contract process to see who has a similar percentage of matching based on the lifestyle questions. The higher the percentage for matching, the more similar answers they have. Entering first year students who know another entering first year student attending Florida Atlantic can request that student as a roommate by searching for the students Z#. Entering first year students must have a completed housing contract and the roommate match must be completed by May 1. Students visited the Roommate Request page of the Housing contract to search and request a roommate after they have completed the housing contract. The Roommate Request page becomes available after the housing contract is completed in its entirety.
Very often the Resident Assistant will talk with their supervisors and help resolve your problem, usually with a meeting of all parties involved. It is important that you maintain an open line of communication with your roommates so that you can talk about problems you may be having.
We expect our residents to treat each other as adults and discuss their differences openly. That is the first step in resolving differences. If you continue to have problems, and have worked initially with your Resident Assistant, you may next contact your Resident Coordinator. These individuals are full-time, professionally trained staff members who can assist you in taking additional steps.
Check with your Resident Assistant to locate the office of your Resident Coordinator.

New students: Requests are prioritized based on tuition deposit date only.
Submission date of the reassignment request does not impact priority.
Requests must include the first name, last name, and Z# of the desired roommate.
Reassignments will be granted only if space becomes available for both students in the same room or suite.
It is unlikely that Housing and Residential Education will be able to accommodate a request for a different space AND a different roommate due to the demand for campus housing.
Reassignments to a different room type are based on cancellations.
Roommate pairing requests will only be accommodated if two open spaces become available in the same room or suite.
If no response is received within 48 hours, the offer will go to the next student in line.
If a student does not respond, they will remain on the reassignment list and keep their original housing assignment.
The original housing assignment will remain active for the semester.
The student will not be offered another reassignment and will remain financially obligated to their housing contract.
Room change requests after move-in begin two weeks into the semester and are subject to availability.
Graduate students may also be eligible for FAU Graduate Grant. These funds are limited and offered on a first come, first served basis, so be sure to complete your FAFSA early (prior to our April 1st priority deadline).
Additionally, graduate students may be eligible for tuition waivers, federal work study, scholarships and fellowships.

You can think of your cost of attendance as the upper limit of the maximum amount of financial aid (including grants, scholarships and federal and private loans) that you may receive for the year. Your cost of attendance is determined by your academic classification (graduate student), residency status, housing status, and enrollment status.
1. Click on "Your Financial Aid" to access Self-Service.
2. Click on "Eligibility" to review student requirements.
3. Select "Student Requirements" and select the Aid Year (if prompted).
If there are any documents under the "Unsatisfied Requirements" section, you must submit these documents ASAP in order to complete the processing of your financial aid.
NOTE: If you select Accept Partial in the offer decision column, then you will need to enter an amount in the Accept Partial Amount column (remembering that all your amounts, even partial, will be split between Fall and Spring, when you are accepting in the Fall). Make sure that you read the Terms and Conditions of Offers Document and then click the Submit Decision button when finished.
If students want to accept ALL offers offered without making changes to the amounts, students can click on the Accept Full Amount All Offers button.

• Will you be 24 years old or older by the first day of classes for the term for which you wish to enroll at FAU?
• At the beginning of the school year will you be working on a master's, specialist or doctorate program (such as MA, MBA, MD, JD, PhD, EdD, or graduate certificate, etc.)?
• As of today, are you married? ( Answer "yes" if you are separated but not divorced.)
• Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you?
• Do you have dependents (other than children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you?
• Are both of your parents deceased, or are you (or were you until age 18) a ward or dependent of the court or state?
• Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?
• Do you provide a minimum of 51 percent of your own support? (Documents such as tax return, W-2 forms, pay stubs, employer earning verification will be required.)
If you feel you qualify as an independent student because you provide a minimum of 51 percent of your own support, you must prove that you are self-supporting (especially true for those who are under the age of 24). Based on the cost of attendance, it will be determined whether the student meets requirements for being considered financially independent for the purposes of establishing residency for tuition purposes.
Admissions staff will evaluate each student's independence eligibility based on number of credit hours enrolled, number of full-time hours worked, federal income tax return information for the student and parent(s), student income, and other factors.
In order for the student to prove that they provide at least 51 percent of their own support, the following information is required:
Documents required:
1. Most recent federal income tax returns
2. W-2 forms
3. Pay stubs
4. Proof that the student is no longer claimed as a dependent by their parent or legal guardian.
5. Copy of parent's most recent federal income tax return.
Applicants who have been accepted to an FAU Graduate Degree Program may submit residency documents by clicking the link below:

• Documents supporting a student's claim for Florida residency must be dated, issued or filed at least 12 months before the first day of the semester for which residency is being sought.
• Students who are dependent on out-of-state parents are presumed to be legal residents of the same state as their parents. Residence in the state of Florida must be for the purpose of establishing a permanent home and not merely incident to enrollment at an institution of higher education.

• Florida in order to qualify for residency.

Claimant: The person who is providing evidence of the establishment of permanent legal residence in Florida. For independent students, the claimant is the student. For dependent students, the claimant can be the student's parent, legal guardian or spouse.
Declaration of Domicile: A sworn statement which states that you reside in and maintain a place of abode in the Florida County of residence in which the document is filed. The signed and notarized document is filed with the Clerk of Courts and states that you relinquish all legal ties with your previous state of residence. Legal Guardian: A legal guardian is appointed by the Florida court system. If the claimant is the court-appointed legal guardian, the student must submit a copy of the court decree naming the claimant as their guardian. A person other than a parent who claims the student as a dependent for income tax purposes is not considered the student's legal guardian. Notarized letters and Power of Attorney paperwork are not considered legal guardianship documents.
Physical Presence: It is important to note that living or attending school in Florida is not tantamount to establishing a legal residence for tuition purposes. Maintaining a legal residence in Florida requires substantial physical presence as a condition. It is imperative that the required 12 month qualifying period be for the purpose of maintaining a bona fide domicile rather than for the purpose of maintaining a mere temporary residence or abode incident to enrollment in an institution of higher education.

All official high school transcripts, dual enrollment transcripts, and test scores must be received by August 1. At that time, we will compare the transcript with the submitted SSAR for accuracy and check your senior grades. Any SSAR inaccuracies and/or any grade below C in the senior year is subject to your admission being rescinded. A cumulative, dual enrollment college GPA below 2.5 may cause your offer of admission to be rescinded.
If you have taken any college courses after high school graduation, you need to send FAU Admissions your official transcript(s) before the start of spring term.
All official AICE, AP, IB, and CLEP results must be sent to FAU from the respective testing agencies by August 1.

Starting in the summer helps your path to a 4-Year Graduation. Benefits include:
• Lighten future semester course loads
• Create scheduling flexibility for internships, research experiences, study abroad, or part-time jobs
• The State University System of Florida requires nine credits of study to be taken in the summer before a student graduates. Enrolling in Jump Start satisfies six of the nine.
