Counseling and Psychological Services
Scope of Services
FAU Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS) provides free and confidential initial consultation and crisis intervention to assess the current needs of eligible* FAU students (*currently enrolled and have paid the health fee).
Students seek services for a wide variety of concerns, spanning from stress, adjustment, worry and relationship challenges to mental health diagnoses such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Each student will be assessed and provided with recommendations according to their specific needs, whether this comes in the form of short-term individual or group therapy on campus, connection to another campus resource, or assistance with connection to an off-campus provider.
When a student’s needs or requests exceed our capacity to provide the appropriate level of care, CAPS partners with the student to transition to resources within the community. Students who may require a transition of care include, but are not limited to a need or request:
- to be seen more frequently than is feasible.
- for weekly individual services on an ongoing, long-term basis;
- for a treatment modality not provided;
- to be seen differently from what is clinically recommended;
- for documentation for an emotional support animal;
- for mandated treatment;
- or the presence of one or more of the following:
- severe alcohol and other drug abuse disorders
- severe eating disorders
